Post Repeater communications question
on: February 3, 2012, 8:12am

On my way home on my mobile last night, I started trying to check in on the repeater when I was just north of the village of Hagaman. On 5W, it sounded like I was getting in fine and keying up the repeater fine. There was a response (albeit quiet and broken sounding) from a young person. I was trying to call up anyone else on there as I was trying to verify that it could have been the other station having trouble getting in well enough. I couldn’t gather the whole callsign (driving and the broken comms makes it difficult). KC2??V I think it was.

Was it just me not being able to hear it well enough from where I was?

Hello,

I think you copied KC2VCA, Willis. He is a young ham operator in the area. If I understood correctly, he got his Tech Licence at 10, he is now 14. He uses a hand held radio and sometimes he is not at the best location to hit the repeater with a strong signal. I believe he lives in Balston SPA, so reaching our repeater from there with an HT is impressive, but sometimes the copy is not that great.

I encourage you to check-in to the NET tomorrow Tuesday at 7PM if you can. That way we can all hear you and give you signal reports from all over the county.

Hope to hear you soon,
Edgar / KC2UEZ

I was in CT yesterday so unless I logged into the echolink with my cell phone (in poor cell coverage areas) I couldn’t make it. I didn’t see a note about the net on Tuesday on the page. I do plan on trying to make it to the meeting on the 15th at the Fulton County Sheriff building.

I had heard Willis KC2VCA on another channel while scanning. It’s great to hear the hobby in such a young person. The hand held, explains a lot.
