Successful Public Service Event!

Today, volunteers from the Tryon Amateur Radio Club and Fulton County ARES came out to support the 6th annual Juveinile Diabetes Research Foundation 5K run at the Boulevard School in Gloversville NY. Our volunteers provided race status communications for the event staff and safety spotting for the participants. We are happy to say that there were no adverse events that took place this year. In past years, we have assisted with locating missing participants and alerted emergency services of race participants in need of medical care. This event included two different operating procedures this year. As a test of our communication abilities, we operated the race on 446.000mhz simplex. We usually operate on a 2 meter simplex frequency. This test showed the ability to use a 70cm frequency if needed for a secondary net frequency. Net control also operated at less than 1/2 watt output power. We had 100% reliable communications throughout the entire event. We also moved our volunteers to different assignments during the race as we did not have as many operators as we usually have available. This was not a bad thing. As a volunteer organization, we realize and expect that our members have other commitments and responsibilities and are not available for all that we do. Today proved the professional abilities of our members to be able to adapt to a situation and still complete our mission with 100% reliability! I wish to thank the following volunteers for participating in today’s event: Joe-KB2TJE, Edgar-KC2UEZ, Grayson-N2KAE, Howard- KD2ABK and Don WA2EZ.

Heathkit is Back in the Kit Business

By popular demand, Heathkit is bringing back the kit building tradition. Successfully building your own products provides a sense of pride and accomplishment, not realized by simply buying something off the shelf.

In late August, Heathkit will debut their new line of Do-it-Yourself kits for common around-the-house items. The first kit will be a Garage Parking Assistant (GPA). The Garage Parking assistant kit lets you build your own system that uses ultrasonic sound waves to locate your car as it enters the garage. The system signals to the driver using LED lights mounted on the wall when the car is detected and in the perfect spot for parking.

The GPA-100 kit consists of two primary assemblies – The LED Display in kit form and the pre-assembled ultrasonic range module. the kit will include everything you need to complete the project except a soldering iron and hand tools.

Next on the market will be a Wireless Swimming Pool Monitor kit followed by many more. Heathkit wants to continue to bring to its customers interesting, unique Heathkit products. Heathkit is interested in learning what types of products kit builders would like to build. Kit builders can submit their suggestions through this website using the Contact Us email.

2011 Adirondack Spin-tacular a Success!!!!

I would like to thank all who helped out with the 2011 Adirondack Spintacular public service event this past Saturday. You all did an outstanding job and presented a showing for our organization. Along with the “normal” race operations, we were able to assist in the successful rescue of a bicyclist with a broken bicycle and locating a missing 9 year old girl. Good job all!! I will have a formal report for this weeks meeting. Until then…..73!! Steve K2ALS
