On Wednesday (9/7/2011) afternoon a call was put to assist with the record flooding throughout Montgomery County.

A sincere thank you  from Dwight Schwabrow, Director of  the  Montgomery County Emergency Management, was extended to all who assisted during the tragic event. We would like to acknowledge and recognize the following hams for helping during the event:   W2PR, KR2L, N2KAE, K2ALS, WA2EZ, KC2WGU.

These volunteers provided critical and essential radio communications, such as lock level readings for the locks located between Amsterdam and Ft. Plain.

After overcoming some challenges, the ham volunteers were able to provide timely information to the EOC. This information was critical to the operation of the EOC and helped determine where to allocate the appropriate support.

By popular demand, Heathkit is bringing back the kit building tradition. Successfully building your own products provides a sense of pride and accomplishment, not realized by simply buying something off the shelf.

In late August, Heathkit will debut their new line of Do-it-Yourself kits for common around-the-house items. The first kit will be a Garage Parking Assistant (GPA). The Garage Parking assistant kit lets you build your own system that uses ultrasonic sound waves to locate your car as it enters the garage. The system signals to the driver using LED lights mounted on the wall when the car is detected and in the perfect spot for parking.

The GPA-100 kit consists of two primary assemblies – The LED Display in kit form and the pre-assembled ultrasonic range module. the kit will include everything you need to complete the project except a soldering iron and hand tools.

Next on the market will be a Wireless Swimming Pool Monitor kit followed by many more. Heathkit wants to continue to bring to its customers interesting, unique Heathkit products. Heathkit is interested in learning what types of products kit builders would like to build. Kit builders can submit their suggestions through this website using the Contact Us email.

I would like to thank all who helped out with the 2011 Adirondack Spintacular public service event this past Saturday. You all did an outstanding job and presented a showing for our organization. Along with the “normal” race operations, we were able to assist in the successful rescue of a bicyclist with a broken bicycle and locating a missing 9 year old girl. Good job all!! I will have a formal report for this weeks meeting. Until then…..73!! Steve K2ALS

Pictures of the event:

We will need as many amateur radio operators as we can get. The length of the race has been extended and more operators are needed to fully cover the event. Remember this is a good noble cause and they need our help.

Our participation is very well appreciated. Besides providing our services in case of a emergency we will be giving our club exposure to the community and also will help us practice in case of a real emergency. We will also Learn how to use tactical calls and relay information. It is a win – win situation.

On the next few NET’s we will coordinate times and location. Mark your calendars for August 13 from 8:30 AM to approximately 12:30.

Mark your calendar. This year ARRL Field Day is approaching. We have less than 2 weeks.

Field day is the single most popular on-the-air ham radio event held annually in the US and Canada. Each year over 35,000 amateurs and people interested on the hobby gather with their clubs, friends or simply by themselves to operate.

To learn more about field day please visit: http://www.arrl.org/field-day.

Joe KB2TJE will be hosting this years Tryon ARC field day at his QTH: 25 East, 11th Ave Gloversville Ny. Join us on Saturday and Sunday. We will have multiple HF and VHF stations. There are plans for a digitalmode station and also we will have some older radios for everyone to see and use. You don’t need to have a ham license to talk on the GOTA station. Join us and experience the trill of talking to other hams across the world.
